You start out with the flame thrower and a Garand, which is a pretty good combo, if you ask me. However, on Veteran, it's an entire different story. On the easiest difficulty, I can finish this level in about 2 minutes with the flame thrower. Your mission is to clear out 3 teams of enemy (Japanese) mortar teams. Although, this level is the shortest level in the game, it will probably take the longest to manage. It's had it's difficult moments, don't get me wrong, but this level is an entire grind of hard enemies raining down all over the place. With a wealth of World War II games available, World at War stands out as one of the best.So far, World at War on Veteran difficulty hasn't been all that hard. Multiplayer is equally impressive, with a deep ranking system and rewards for bolstering your skills. Weapons are diverse, ranging from mountable assault rifles to grenades and sniper rifles. There were a few moments where opponents were inches away and opted to sit and aim as opposed to aggressively attacking. However, they do exhibit some odd behaviors. On the default difficulty, opponents are relentless. You'll see enemies burned alive or missing limbs following explosions. Smoke and gunfire blanket the skies of Berlin as you break through Nazi defenses. Because most prefer hiding in grass, your character will often use a flamethrower to flush out enemies.
Japanese enemies employ ambush tactics like charging with bayonettes. The Russian missions tend to feel like typical WWII games, but action in the Pacific is more intriguing. While the last release in the franchise, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, set the bar for first-person shooters on consoles, World at War delivers a very similar experience.
