You can make elevated paths that go over exhibits. your animal has (there's a huge selection). You can customize the type of food and amount of terrain (no "3 squares of grass and 15 squares of gray stone"). The pros: you can add as many trees as you like. So I may be pickier than you about 1 vs 2. I'm the type that does a grid pattern zoo with minimum exhibit space and attempt to display every animal.
